New Study: Brain Pollution Caused by Lack of Sleep
New Study: Brain Pollution Caused by Lack of Sleep
New Study: Brain Pollution Caused by Lack of Sleep
[Mon, 23 Jun 2025 23:55:48 +0300]

Moscow - Saba:
A group of scientists has identified how the brain "cleanses" itself to maintain human health and vitality, helping to prevent dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and related conditions.

According to Russia’s Sputnik news agency, the health-focused website Health Digest reported on Monday that "brain pollution results from lack of sleep, and proper, sufficient sleep is the correct way to cleanse the brain, protecting humans from dementia."

The medical report explained that "sleep deprivation leads to memory lapses, reduced motivation for daily routines, and weakens the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to colds and flu."

The website cited a 2021 study involving over 8,000 people, starting in middle age and followed for 25 years. It found that those who slept less than six hours in middle age had a 22% to 37% higher risk of dementia compared to those who got at least seven hours of sleep.

The report noted that without adequate sleep, the brain lacks the opportunity to clear out substances like beta-amyloid proteins, which accumulate during the day.

Additionally, the report stated that "during sleep, the brain activates a specialized waste-clearing system. Just as the lymphatic system removes toxins from the rest of the body, the brain relies on the glymphatic system to eliminate substances that could become toxic over time."
