Washington - Saba:
79 States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued on Friday, a joint statement affirming their continued and unwavering support for the Court's independence, impartiality and neutrality.
The statement emphasized that the Court serves as a fundamental pillar of the international justice system by ensuring accountability for the most serious international crimes and justice for victims.
The statement noted that the court is facing unprecedented challenges today, noting that "punitive measures have been imposed against the court, its officials and staff, as well as its collaborators, in reaction to the court carrying out its mandate in accordance with the Rome Statute."
The statement said: "These measures increase the risk of impunity for the most serious crimes and threaten to undermine the rule of international law, which is essential for the promotion of global order and security.
Moreover, the sanctions may jeopardize the confidentiality of sensitive information and the safety of interested parties, including victims, witnesses and court officials, many of whom are our citizens," the statement said.
It continued: "As strong supporters of the Court, we deplore any attempts to undermine its independence, impartiality and neutrality. We are committed to ensuring the continuity of the Court's work so that it can continue to function effectively and independently. As we collectively strive to promote international justice, we emphasize the indispensable role of the Court in ending impunity, strengthening the rule of law, and establishing lasting respect for international law and human rights."
