Through its qualitative and strategic projects, the Cancer Control Fund has contributed to alleviating the suffering of patients and reducing travel abroad for treatment.
The Fund was able to support efforts to combat and prevent cancer, contribute to establishing and supporting centers, projects and programs related to combating this disease in accordance with a national strategy, and contribute to financing scientific studies and research related to combating cancer according to available capabilities.
Last year 2024 witnessed many achievements that were made, including projects implemented and under implementation to develop the infrastructure and support the operating expenses of the centers and units to continue providing their services to patients, in addition to projects that contribute to spreading awareness by implementing awareness, rehabilitation and training activities and campaigns.
Infrastructure
A report issued by the Fund, a copy of which was received by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), stated that an early diagnosis unit for breast and cervical cancer was established and equipped at the Al-Sab’een Maternity and Childhood Hospital at a cost of nine million and 951 thousand riyals.
He pointed out that the implementation of the second phase of the Great Messenger Center project for the treatment of tumors in the Al-Jarda area in Sana'a is being completed at a value of one billion, 366 million, and 882 thousand riyals, the second phase of the Great Messenger project in Al-Hodeidah Governorate at a value of one billion, 719 million, and 651 thousand riyals, and the second phase of the Great Messenger project in Sa'dah Governorate at a value of two billion, 288 million, and 993 thousand riyals.
Support for centers and units
According to the report, the Fund worked to support the operating expenses of the centers and units to continue providing their services to patients, as it provided support to the National Center for Oncology Treatment in Sana'a in the amount of 516 million and 223 thousand riyals, and the Children's Leukemia Center at Kuwait Hospital in Sana'a in the amount of 154 million and 396 thousand riyals, and supported the oncology treatment units in the governorates "Hajjah, Saada, Dhamar, Taiz, Al-Mahwit , Palestine Hospital" in the amount of 204 million and 152 thousand riyals.
Medicines and medical supplies
The report indicated that the Fund financed tenders for purchasing medicines for the National Cancer Treatment Center at a value of two billion, 682 million, and 292 thousand riyals, and worked on directly providing chemical and targeted medicines and medical supplies for patients, at a value of three billion, 711 million, and 881 thousand riyals, as well as supporting the costs of surgical operations to remove cancerous tumors for patients at a value of 184 million, 864 thousand riyals, and supporting the costs of radiotherapy sessions for patients at a total of 243 million, 857 thousand riyals.
Training, qualification and awareness
The report explained that an awareness workshop was implemented on the dangers of excessive use of agricultural pesticides, targeting 200 farmers from the Ans Directorate in Dhamar Governorate, and the implementation of the sixth national campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer and methods of prevention, as well as the seventh national campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of plastic containers.
The eighth national campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking was also implemented, as well as a campaign to raise awareness of the most prominent factors that cause cancer and ways to prevent it through giant billboards in the streets of the capital, in addition to sending 26 doctors abroad to study “postgraduate studies” at the fund’s expense to specialize in many fields of oncology treatment.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Fund, Dr. Abdul Salam Al-Madani, confirmed to the Yemeni News Agency (Saba) that the Fund has become a beacon of hope for cancer patients and the fight against the disease, along with other health institutions, noting that since the Fund began carrying out its duties at the beginning of 2019 AD, and providing its services with complete independence in administrative and financial aspects, it has worked to support efforts to combat and prevent cancer.
He explained that the fund contributes to supporting training and qualification programmes for cadres working in cancer control, as well as supporting and providing the medicines and medical devices necessary for diagnosing and treating cancer in government centres, in addition to working to establish a comprehensive national reference centre for cancer control, and opening branches for it in the governorates.
Dr. Al-Madani stated that the Fund works to provide its services in supporting and maintaining the radiological diagnostic unit at the National Cancer Treatment Center, to provide diagnostic services, support and finance tenders for purchasing medicines directed to patients, finance the purchase of solutions and laboratory supplies for the National Cancer Treatment Center to provide free examination services to patients, and coordinate surgical operations in government hospitals.
He pointed out that cancer, like other diseases, the earlier it is detected, the more likely it is to be treated and the recovery rate is high.
The Chairman of the Fund’s Board of Directors called for concerted efforts, cooperation and active participation in community awareness through social media and media platforms, to prevent this disease.
