Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, ranked first in the world, reached the third round of the Indian Wells American Championship, one of the thousand-point WTA tournaments, after defeating American McCartney Kessler in two sets to none.
In the second round, Sabalenka needed an hour and 32 minutes to defeat Kessler (7-6, 6-3).
American Coco Gauff, ranked third in the world, also qualified for the same round after she narrowly defeated Japanese Muyoka Ushijima in two sets to one (6-4, 3-6, 7-6), to set up a date in the next round with Greek Maria Sakkari, who defeated Bulgarian Viktoria Tomova in two sets to none (6-0, 6-3).
Italian Jasmine Paolini, ranked sixth in the world, defeated American Eva Jovic in two sets to one (7-6, 1-6, 6-3), to meet Romanian Jacqueline Cristian in the next round, who also defeated Canadian Leylah Fernandez in two sets to one (5-7, 7-6, 6-3).
In the rest of the matches, Belgian Elise Mertens defeated Australian Kimberly Birrell (6-4, 7-5), Russian Daria Kasatkina defeated American Sofia Kenin (3-6, 7-5, 6-4), and Swiss Belinda Bencic defeated American Amanda Anismova (6-4, 6-7, 6-1).
Romanian Jacqueline Cristian also defeated Canadian Leylah Fernandez (5-7, 7-6, 6-3), Russian Ludmila Samsonova defeated American Catherine McCanley (7-6, 6-4), Russian Diana Schneider defeated American Alicia Parks (6-1, 6-1), and American Emma Navarro defeated Romanian Sorana Cirstea (3-6, 6-1, 7-6).
