Rome - Saba:
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) adopted a resolution on the situation in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday during the organization's Council meetings, which are being held from the 7th to the 11th of this month at its headquarters in Rome, Italy.
The Palestinian Ma'an News Agency reported that the resolution stipulates renewed support for the FAO's medium- and long-term action plans aimed at restoring and rebuilding food and agricultural systems in the Gaza Strip.
These plans emphasized ongoing efforts to rehabilitate damaged infrastructure, enhance local production, and increase resilience, which are essential to ensuring a dignified future for the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
The resolution called on the Organization to continue expanding its interventions and providing support by promoting sustainable agriculture, strengthening food security, and continuing to monitor and assess the situation to ensure the long-term resilience of food and agricultural systems.
The resolution also welcomed FAO's Rapid Response Initiative for Comprehensive Emergency Response and commended FAO's interventions in providing immediate relief while preserving remaining production capacities in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. These measures reflect the Organization's commitment to protecting agri-food systems, which are vital to Palestinians.
The resolution stated that the estimated cost of reconstructing the agricultural sector in the Gaza Strip is approximately $4.2 billion, according to FAO's latest assessments, which reveal widespread destruction of the agricultural sector in the Gaza Strip, significantly undermining local food production and the livelihoods of millions, and further exacerbating the critical food security situation in the Gaza Strip.
