Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stressed, during a phone call with his Iraqi counterpart Abdullatif Jamal Rashid, on Friday that relations with Iraq represent one of the most important arenas of Iranian foreign policy, noting that "Iran views the Iraqi people as brothers."
According to a statement from the Iranian presidency, Pezeshkian told Rashid he hoped "the opportunity to meet directly again will soon arise to discuss ways to enhance understanding and cohesion, and expand and deepen relations and cooperation between the two countries in a way that serves the well-being, stability, and progress of the peoples of Iran and Iraq and all the peoples of the region."
For his part, Rashid stressed that the Iraqi government and people have always stood by the Islamic Republic of Iran, saying, "We always wish goodness and stability for our neighbors and friends in Iran."
The Iraqi president also expressed his hope for a meeting soon with President Pezeshkian to consult on ways to develop bilateral relations, stressing Baghdad's full readiness to cooperate with Tehran to enhance security, stability, and prosperity in both countries and the region.
