Mexico City - (Saba):
An ancient pyramid dating back to the Michoacán Kingdom in Mexico collapsed on the night of July 29, unable to withstand the heavy rains that hit the region during the summer of 2024.
The 15-meter-tall pyramid is located in the Ihuatzio archaeological site in the state of Michoacán and is considered one of the most prominent monuments that have survived for centuries.
The collapse was the result of heavy rains following months of severe drought, which caused cracks in the structure that allowed water to seep in, according to the National Institute of Anthropology and History. The institute confirmed that six other structures at the site are in critical condition.
This event demonstrates the extent to which human heritage is being affected by global climate change. Numerous archaeological sites around the world, including cave paintings in Oceania and monuments in Europe, are being damaged by extreme weather events.
For the Burebisha people, who are native to the area, the pyramid's collapse could be interpreted as an ill omen, one of their descendants said in a Facebook post.
