Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on Friday, during a meeting with his US counterpart, Marco Rubio, to make joint efforts to find the "right path of understanding" between Beijing and Washington in the new era.
During the meeting, the first of its kind under the administration of US President Donald Trump, held on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in the Malaysian capital, he stressed the importance of Washington viewing Beijing objectively, rationally, and pragmatically.
Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, added that US policy toward his country should be based on the principles of peaceful coexistence, cooperation based on mutual benefit, and mutual respect, according to the Chinese Xinhua News Agency.
For his part, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stressed the need to keep bilateral communication channels open, describing the discussions with his US counterpart, Wang Yi, as "constructive and practical," according to State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce. According to Bruce, the two sides agreed to explore possible areas of cooperation, with a focus on managing differences between the two countries.
