Washington – Saba

American sprinter Noah Lyles clocked the world’s fastest 200-meter time of the year on Saturday during the U.S. track and field trials.

The three-time world champion powered through the race to finish in 19.63 seconds, ahead of Kenny Bednarek—the 100m winner—who placed second with a time of 19.67 seconds.

In the women’s 200m, Melissa Jefferson-Wooden claimed victory, becoming the first woman since 2003 to win both the 100m and 200m titles. Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas secured one of the top three spots—and a ticket to next month’s World Championships in Tokyo—by edging out Brittany Brown in a photo finish.

Jefferson-Wooden led the race from the start, finishing in 21.84 seconds. Anavia Battle came in second with 22.13 seconds, while both Thomas and Brown recorded 22.20 seconds. Thomas narrowly took third place by a thousandth of a second in the photo finish.

Donavan Brazier, the 2019 world champion, made a strong comeback after nearly three years away from competition, winning the men’s 800m in 1:42.16. He was followed by Cooper Lutkenhaus, who recently broke the U18 world record, with a time of 1:42.27.

In the women’s 800m, Roisin Willis finished first in 1:59.26, while Cole Hocker won the men’s 5000m just a day after earning bronze in the 1500m—an event he won at the Paris Olympics.

Three-time world silver medalist Sandi Morris cleared 4.83 meters to win the women’s pole vault title.

Meanwhile, Jacory Tharp won the 110m hurdles in the absence of Paris Olympic champion Grant Holloway, who had posted the fifth-fastest time in the semifinals but chose not to compete in the final, having already qualified for the Tokyo World Championships.
