US police raid University of California to disperse pro-Palestinian sit-in

WASHINGTON May 02. 2024 (Saba) - The American police stormed on Thuresday the campus of the University of California in preparation to disperse a student sit-in calling for an end to the war on Gaza.

A number of students set up tents on the campus of Fordham University in Manhattan city to protest agaist the crimes and massacres committed by the Zionist enemy in the Gaza Strip.

Local media reports indicated that hundreds of police officers gathered wearing protective helmets on the campus of the University of California in Los Angeles, United States, since last night's darkness, ready to remove a pro-Palestinian protest camp attacked by Zionist supporters the previous night.

The expected dispersal operation at the University of California is the latest contentious stance in the escalating tension witnessed by American universities, as protests against the crimes of the Zionist enemy in the Gaza Strip have led to clashes between students, and between them and university administrations and law enforcement agencies.

Starting at sunset, police forces arrived at the campus of the University of California alongside a group of tents occupied by demonstrators, and some protesters were seen wearing helmets, goggles, and breathing masks in anticipation of the raid, a day after the university announced that the protest camp was illegal.

On Wednesday, the New York police stormed the campus of Columbia University and dispersed the protesters, evacuating Hamilton Hall and arresting several protesting students.

New York Mayor Eric Adams said that the police arrested about 300 participants in the protests at Columbia University.

At Fordham University in Manhattan, a number of students set up tents on the campus protesting the Zionist war against the Gaza Strip.

The "New York Post" news site reported that about 25 demonstrators set up seven tents inside the lobby of the "Leon Lowenstein" center on the campus of the "Lincoln Center" affiliated with the university, while others gathered outside the glass doors of the center.

As protests began at Fordham University, the university administration immediately issued a statement warning against the sit-in and urging students to disperse.

The statement also warned of the possibility of expelling students if the protest is not dispersed, or of not allowing them to participate in exams and student graduation ceremonies.

On April 18 , rejecting students began a sit-in at the campus of Columbia University in New York, demanding its administration to stop its academic cooperation with Zionist universities and withdraw its investments in companies supporting the occupation of Palestinian territories.

With the intervention of police forces and the arrest of dozens of students, the anger escalated, extending the protests to dozens of universities in the United States, including leading universities such as Harvard, George Washington, New York, Yale, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and North Carolina.

In an unprecedented toll, American media reported the arrest of more than 1,700 people in the student protests taking place in American universities.

Later, the unprecedented student movement in support of Palestine expanded to universities in countries such as France, Britain, Germany, Canada, and India, all of which witnessed supportive demonstrations for their counterparts in American universities, demanding an end to the war on Gaza and boycotting companies supplying arms to the Zionist entity.
