SANA'A July 04. 2024 (Saba) - The aggression coalition’s arbitrary measures against patients, especially cancer patients, by continuing to close Sana’a airport and preventing the entry of life-saving medicines, prompted many to remain in their houses awaiting death, due to their health condition, their fear of risking their lives, their inability to bear the hardship of traveling to Aden airport, and their inability to pay its high costs. .

Statistics confirm that cancer patients increased by 50 percent during the years of aggression, as there are more than 90,000 cases registered with the National Cancer Center, including 40,000 during the years of aggression as a result of the use of internationally prohibited weapons, in addition to 30,000 children being infected with cancer, and the aggression coalition preventing access to... Radiological devices , medications for diagnosis and treatment.

According to statistics, the incidence of leukemia among children has increased from 300 to 300 million to 1,700 cases in Sana'a and the provinces.

To overcome this suffering and alleviate the suffering of cancer patients, the government, represented by the Ministry of Public Health and Population, worked on many treatments , achievements and implemented many projects that were opened by the higher authorities, in addition to providing medicines, devices and equipment.

The Health Ministry set its priorities regarding alleviating the suffering of cancer patients in accordance with the directives of the revolution leader , Sayyed Abdul-Malik Badr al-Din al-Houthi, and supported the Supreme Political Council, as it worked to provide a linear accelerator device for radiotherapy for the oncology center, and opened six oncology units in the provinces with equipment, rehabilitation, operational expenses, and the provision of medications for tumors, with a total of 15 billion riyals.

The will and strategic directions of the state overcame the challenges imposed by the aggression on the nation with indicators and service projects that represent a glimmer of hope for overcoming economic challenges and continuing to translate aspirations into projects that touch upon the concerns , suffering of patients and the interest of society.

Last September in Sana'a, His Excellency Field Marshal Mahdi Al-Mashat, Head of the Supreme Political Council, inaugurated the radiotherapy unit project worth four million and 500 thousand dollars, funded by the Cancer Control Fund, which is the first radiotherapy unit in the republic, equipped with the latest medical supplies and equipment. It will work to bring about a revolution quality in treating cancer patients.

The unit consists of a linear accelerator device, which is considered the latest generation in radiotherapy technology, changing standards, revolutions and major breakthroughs in the treatment of some specific cancerous tumors, applying stereotactic radiosurgery to the brain (SRS), and stereotactic radiotherapy to the body (SBRT).

The device also features the possibility of performing surgical procedures such as (Gamma Knife) and (Cyber Knife), which are performed in a shorter time, as well as applying three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (CRT), intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), and volumetric radiotherapy. Density modifier (VMAT) is applied in a faster, more sensitive and accurate way.

The unit consists of a "City Simulator" device, which performs CT imaging , planning of tumors, a control unit that performs the physical process and radiation calibration.

President Al-Mashat also inaugurated the Great Messenger Center for Oncology Surgery project, worth $1.8 million, with funding from the Cancer Control Fund. It consists of four floors and contains diagnostic facilities represented by sections for computed tomography, x-rays, early detection of breast cancer, and television scans. It also consists of laboratory and hospitalization sections. It has a capacity of 48 beds and an intensive care unit with a capacity of 13 beds, in addition to recovery beds, major operating departments and their annexes, and a central sterilization department, in addition to an oxygen generation station, a central sink, and 10 outpatient clinics.

The project is the first of its kind in Yemen, as a surgical center specializing in oncology surgery, which saves the hassle of traveling abroad to perform surgeries and removal of cancerous tumors and provides free surgical and hospitalization services for all cancer patients.

In this context, and moving towards improving services provided to cancer patients and coordinating efforts between various concerned parties, last February, the parliament approved the report of the Public Health and Population Committee regarding the results of its field visit to the Cancer Control Fund, the National Center for Oncology, and the National Cancer Foundation, which obligated the government, represented by the Ministry of Health, to implement A number of recommendations, the most important of which is establishing a working mechanism for coordination between them, the center, the fund, and the foundation, to avoid the recurrence of shortages of some medicines for patients, which caused complications due to their inability to purchase them.

The recommendations called on the Fund to coordinate with the Foundation to fully pay the costs of surgical operations performed on cancer patients, as well as oblige the Fund to provide supportive medications , find a mechanism to preserve and sustain them to alleviate the suffering of patients.

The parliament report recommended that the Fund intensify efforts to provide full medical, diagnostic and therapeutic services to cancer patients.

The recommendations also obligated the Ministry of Health to establish a coordination mechanism between the Fund, the Center and the Foundation in order to integrate the service provided to cancer patients, follow up with international organizations to support the Fund and the National Center for Oncology Treatment, and work in coordination with the relevant authorities in the government to introduce and provide radioactive iodine and demand the opening of flights to all parts of the world.

They urged the Cancer Control Foundation to work to expedite the opening of the second phase at Al-Amal Hospital for Oncology Treatment in Sana’a regarding the surgical service, and to provide the committee with documents and data related to the Foundation’s revenues and disbursements.

The recommendations also called on the government to establish a national center for leukemia and bone marrow transplantation.

Since exercising its duties and providing its services at the beginning of the year 2019 AD, the Cancer Control Fund has worked with complete independence in the administrative and financial aspects to support efforts to combat , prevent cancer, to contribute to the establishment , support of centers, projects , programs related to combating this disease in accordance with a national strategy, to contribute to financing studies and scientific research related to it by combating cancer according to available capabilities.

A report issued by the Fund stated that it financed tenders for purchasing medicines for the National Center for Oncology at a value of 7 billion and 482 million and 782 thousand riyals and worked to directly provide chemical and targeted drugs and medical supplies to patients at a rate of 1,809 medical services worth five billion , 483 million and 481 thousand riyals. As well as supporting the costs of 90,756 radiotherapy sessions for patients at a value of one billion, 510 million and 863 thousand riyals, and supporting the costs of surgeries to remove cancerous tumors for patients with (861) surgical operations at a value of 187 million and 455 thousand riyals.

The Fund also contributed to providing 700,589 medical examination services to patients by financing the purchase of medical solutions for the laboratories of the National Center for Oncology at a value of 246 million and 954 thousand riyals.
