SANTIAGO, July 19. 2024 (Saba) - A powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck northern Chile early Friday, with no reports of injuries or major damage.
The American Institute of Geophysics reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was located 265 kilometers east of the coastal city of Antofagasta, at a depth of 126 kilometers.
"So far there are no reports of injuries or major damage, but teams are collecting information," Chilean President Gabriel Boric stated on the X platform today.
No tsunami warning has been issued following the tremor.
Chile is situated on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a region known for its intense seismic activity stretching from Japan across Southeast Asia and the Pacific Basin.
In 2010, an 8.8-magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami that devastated southern and central Chile, resulting in the deaths of approximately 520 people.
