British government mobilizes six thousand additional police to confront riots
[Wed, 07 Aug 2024 18:27:59 +0300]

LONDON August 07. 2024 (Saba) -The British government announced on Tuesday that six thousand additional police officers were on alert in preparation for dealing with the riots.

Justice Minister Heidi Alexander was quoted by BBC radio on Tuesday as saying the government had emptied 500 more places in prisons and recruited 6,000 specialist police officers to deal with the ongoing violence.

"We will make sure that anyone who is sentenced to prison as a result of riots and unrest, there will be a place in prison waiting for them."

Several British cities are witnessing far-right-led violence, which erupted after three girls were killed last week.

British police have arrested more than 378 people, and officers in Belfast, Northern Ireland, were attacked when rioters tried to set fire to a shop owned by a foreign national.

On Monday, Prime Minister Keir Starmer convened an emergency meeting of ministers and police chiefs to discuss the unrest.

Starmer told media after the meeting that the government would "work to strengthen criminal justice" to ensure "swift sanctions".
