Official data showed today, Sunday, that the sales of eco-friendly cars of the five South Korean companies recorded a new record last year, driven by the popularity of hybrid models.
According to Korean media, the five South Korean automakers recorded 450,194 units in eco-friendly car sales last year, an increase of 11.1 percent from 405,331 units in 2023, according to separate data from Hyundai Motor, Kia, General Motors Korea, KG Mobility, and Renault Korea Motors.
Hybrid model sales reached 356,058 units, up 24.9 percent year-on-year last year, accounting for 88 percent of total eco-friendly car sales, while electric vehicle sales fell 21.2 percent from 115,900 units in 2023 to 91,385 units last year.
Hydrogen fuel cell vehicle sales also fell 36.4 percent from 4,238 units to 2,751 units.
An auto industry official said that despite slowing sales of electric vehicles, demand for eco-friendly vehicles remained strong thanks to increased sales of hybrid models.
