Geneva - Saba:
Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva Gennady Gatilov announced today, Sunday, that the United States is not ready to resume serious negotiations with Russia on the issue of nuclear disarmament.
Sputnik Agency quoted Gatilov as saying on the occasion of "Diplomat's Day", "In practice, there has been no mention or talk about resuming a serious dialogue in the field of arms control, which was stopped by the way at the initiative of Washington, the Americans are not ready for that."
He continued, saying, "How can a normal dialogue be conducted between countries in general when one party does not consider the other equal? And does not take into account their legitimate interests, especially in the field of security?"
Gatilov added that the United States instead seeks with all its actions to inflict maximum damage on Russia in the military, financial, economic, political and other fields.
It is noteworthy that the "New START" Treaty was signed in 2010 and was extended until February 5, 2026. It is the cornerstone of strategic stability between the United States and Russia, as it focuses primarily on limiting the number of deployed strategic nuclear warheads and their delivery systems.
In February 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the suspension of Russia's participation in the treaty, stressing that his country would not allow the United States and NATO to inspect its nuclear facilities, accusing Washington of not adhering to the terms of the treaty and seeking to undermine Russian national security.
Last January, the commander of the Russian Strategic Missile Forces, General Sergei Karakayev, did not rule out the possibility of Russia increasing the number of nuclear warheads on its deployed platforms in response to similar measures by the United States, but he confirmed at the same time that Moscow intends to keep the number of its nuclear warheads within the limits of the "New START" Treaty.
