New York - Saba:
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced that he will attend the extraordinary Arab summit in Cairo next Tuesday to discuss the reconstruction of Gaza, stressing that the Palestinians deserve lasting stability and just and principled peace.
Guterres stressed the rejection of all forms of ethnic cleansing, stressing the need for Gaza to remain an integral part of the Palestinian state. He explained that his priorities are to continue the ceasefire, provide and protect humanitarian aid, and maintain the role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
He pointed to the importance of establishing a political framework that enhances Gaza's recovery, and emphasizes that Gaza remains part of an independent Palestinian state. He also called for calming the situation in the West Bank and halting unilateral measures such as settlement expansion.
Guterres stressed that the only solution to peace is to achieve a two-state solution, with the right of the Palestinians to self-determination on their land, and the need for Jerusalem to be the capital of the two states. He added that the Palestinians deserve just peace and lasting stability.
