Geneva - Saba:
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, warned yesterday, Thursday, of the danger of the escalation of the conflict in Sudan, and the possibility of mass deaths due to hunger.
During a session before the Human Rights Council in Geneva, according to Agence France-Presse, Turk confirmed that Sudan is "on the brink of explosion", pointing to the increasing risks of "horrific crimes and mass deaths due to famine", as he believes that the level of escalation has never been higher than it is now.
It is noteworthy that the fighting broke out in April 2023, following a power struggle between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces.
This warning came in conjunction with the World Food Program's temporary suspension of the distribution of food aid in a camp for displaced persons in North Darfur, which is already suffering from famine, amid escalating violence in the region.
