President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen stressed on Thursday the need for Europe to be "prepared and able to protect itself from direct threats", noting the need for the European Union to take special measures in "exceptional" times.
The President of the European Commission said, in a statement before the start of the emergency European summit in Brussels on Ukraine and issues related to European security and defense, that Europe and Ukraine are living a "decisive moment", noting that the goal is to put Ukraine in a position "that allows it to protect itself and strive for a lasting and just peace".
For his part, President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, said that the summit, which will be held later today, is "very important", stressing that "Europe's security and defense are inseparable from Ukraine's security and defense".
The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is participating in this summit, praising the great support his country has received from the Europeans since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
