Geneva - Saba:
On World Tuberculosis Day, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the deadliest infectious diseases, with approximately 3,425 people dying every day from the disease and another 30,000 becoming infected.
Despite progress in combating the disease, which has saved 79 million lives since 2000, there remains a significant gap between the number of people infected and those diagnosed and treated.
The organization noted improvements in TB diagnosis and treatment services in 2022, but disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing conflicts slowed progress.
It called on countries to fulfill their pledges and increase funding and innovation in research and treatment to eliminate TB.
