Caracas - Saba:
The Venezuelan government announced last night that the public sector's workweek would be reduced to three days, after water levels began to drop in the country, threatening hydroelectric power production.
The government said in a statement that, starting Monday, daily work shifts in the public sector will be reduced to four and a half hours, starting at 8:00 AM, and that office work will be limited to three days a week. It also urged citizens to conserve energy in their homes.
A government statement stated that "as a result of the climate emergency that has led to rising temperatures worldwide, we are facing a climate event that is affecting water levels in the reservoirs that generate electricity in the Andean region."
A significant portion of Venezuela's electricity is generated by hydroelectric power plants.
Electricity rationing is common in Venezuela, and the country has experienced frequent and prolonged power outages since 2019, which the government has attributed to sabotage.
