Foreign Minister meets UN Resident Coordinator in Sana’a

Sana’a – Saba:

Foreign Minister Jamal Amer met today with Julian Harneis, the UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sana’a.

During the meeting, Minister Amer expressed his astonishment at the UN’s failure to fulfill its responsibilities so far in condemning the brutal U.S. aggression, which he described as a flagrant violation of the UN Charter and international law.

He pointed out that the continued suspension of humanitarian operations in Sa’dah Governorate, which faces daily American aggression, is unprecedented in the history of the United Nations, calling for the resumption of humanitarian work in Sa’dah.

The Minister added that the American escalation has deliberately targeted the majority of funding sources for humanitarian projects implemented by both international governmental and non-governmental organizations in Yemen. Meanwhile, the UN continues to issue statements calling for increased funding without identifying the parties responsible for the suspension of many life-saving humanitarian projects, especially those serving the most vulnerable regions and individuals.

He also urged the UN Resident Coordinator to pressure UN offices and programs operating in Yemen to meet their commitments, especially the World Food Programme (WFP), which has previously imported spoiled food shipments, offered written apologies, and pledged to replace the spoiled supplies.

He further stated, "The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has evaded its obligations toward irregular migrants and failed to provide medical and health services to migrants injured by Saudi border guards’ gunfire."

Minister Amer also noted that the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) has reneged on providing services to asylum seekers, adding to the economic, social, and security burdens on the government and local communities.

For his part, UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator Julian Harneis stated that the United Nations is facing a financial crisis, which has led to a shortage in funding for humanitarian projects and activities.

He affirmed that the UN is working to urge donors to fulfill their financial commitments so that it can continue its humanitarian role.
