Sana’a – SABA:
The National Institute for Administrative Sciences in Sana’a today concluded a scientific workshop dedicated to discussing and approving unified academic plans for equivalent disciplines across Yemeni universities, held under the slogan: “Towards a Unified National Framework for Academic Plans in Public and Private Universities.”
The two-day workshop—organized by the Higher Education Sector at the Ministry of Education and Scientific Research—brought together 278 academics and experts from various Yemeni universities. It aimed to discuss, unify, and approve academic plans for several university programs, including humanities, education, business administration, law, medicine and surgery, anesthesia, midwifery and nursing, pharmacy, languages, and clinical nutrition.
At the closing session, Dr. Ibrahim Luqman, Undersecretary for Higher Education at the Ministry, stressed that the initiative is part of broader efforts to update and standardize academic programs, eliminate inconsistencies between curricula in public and private institutions, and create a more coherent and aligned higher education system.
He noted that, after analysis and review, the committee found discrepancies in program names, credit hours, and course translations, along with overly dense content in some areas and the absence of key subjects that are typically included in global academic references.
Dr. Luqman highlighted the workshop’s importance in addressing academic gaps and resolving variations that had previously hindered student transfers between universities, especially during credit evaluation processes.
The unified academic plans will be implemented starting from the 1447 AH academic year, initially for first-year bachelor’s degree students across all Yemeni universities. The second phase will target second-year curricula next year, with one academic year standardized annually moving forward.
During the closing session—attended by Dr. Zaid Al-Haddour, Undersecretary for Secondary Education—Dr. Aref Al-Hammadi, Head of the Academic Plan Unification Committee and National Quality Expert, reviewed the project’s three-phase implementation process:
- Assessment of the current situation in universities
- Design of initial drafts and proposed academic plans
- Discussion, enrichment, approval, and development of the final version
The session was also attended by ministry officials, representatives of various education sectors, and the Academic Accreditation Council.
