London - Saba
Tunisian tennis player Ons Jabeur announced on Thursday that she is stepping away from the sport, without clarifying whether the decision marks a permanent retirement or a temporary break, following a series of setbacks and ongoing struggles to regain her form.
In a message posted on her X (formerly Twitter) account, Jabeur wrote:
“Over the past two years, I’ve worked so hard, pushed through injuries, and faced many challenges, but deep inside, I haven’t felt true happiness on the court in a while.”
She continued:
“Tennis is a beautiful sport, but now I feel it’s time to step back and finally put myself first—to breathe, to heal, and to rediscover the simple joys of life.”
Jabeur thanked her fans for their understanding and support, adding that their love means a lot to her and that she carries it with her.
She concluded:
“Even when I’m away from the court, I’ll stay connected in different ways and will share this journey with all of you.”
The 30-year-old has struggled with recurring injuries, especially in her knee, over the past two years. Despite repeated attempts to return to form, she has not managed to regain the level that once saw her ranked world No. 2.
Her recent poor performances have caused her to fall to 71st in the WTA rankings. Jabeur’s last appearance was at Wimbledon, where she was forced to retire from her first-round match against Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova after losing the first set and trailing 0-2 in the second.
