Brussels - Saba:
Scientists from the European Union announced today, Friday, that 2024 was the first full year in which global temperatures exceeded the 1.5 degree Celsius barrier above pre-industrial levels.
The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Monitoring Service reported in a statement that climate change is pushing the Earth's temperature to levels that humans have never seen before in modern times.
Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus Climate Change Monitoring Service, said: The data shows that 2024 was the warmest or second warmest month since records began, indicating that the Earth's average temperature in 2024 was 1.6 degrees Celsius higher than it was in the period from 1850 to 1900, which is the "pre-industrial period" before humans began burning fossil fuels that emit carbon dioxide on a large scale.
