The Hague – Saba:
The Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Court (ICC) announced today its rejection of requests to cancel or suspend the arrest warrants issued against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
In its statement from The Hague, the court clarified that the appeal submitted by "Israel", questioning the court’s jurisdiction over crimes committed in Palestinian territories, arguing that Palestine is not a recognized state and lacks full sovereignty, was accepted for review.
However, the court emphasized that the request to cancel or suspend the arrest warrants is a separate matter and has been denied. The arrest warrants remain valid, and the decision on jurisdiction will now be re-examined by the Pre-Trial Chamber, which initially issued the warrants on November 21, 2024.
That original decision concluded there were reasonable grounds to believe that Netanyahu and Gallant were responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
