The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned of the significant negative impact on the economies of Mexico and Canada if the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on their imports to the United States continue.
IMF spokeswoman Julie Kozack said in statements on Thursday that the US tariffs on Mexico , Canada and new tariffs on China, along with countermeasures announced by China, Canada, and possibly Mexico, could exacerbate financial volatility and increase global uncertainty.
The IMF will issue a more comprehensive assessment of the impact of the shift in US trade policy on the global economy, and the countries most affected by it, when it releases updated economic projections in April, during the IMF and World Bank spring meetings in Washington.
Kozack noted the potential impact on Canada and Mexico, and said it will be critical to assess whether the uncertainty in global markets is short-lived or sustainable.
