London - Saba:
Some people sometimes experience symptoms of rapid and sudden weight loss, which may indicate serious illnesses.
Regarding this topic, British physician and endocrinologist David Cavna told the Daily Mail: "Sudden weight loss may be an indicator of certain diseases, such as diabetes and thyroid disease. Sudden weight loss may be caused by type 1 diabetes, which is a common occurrence in people with this condition."
He added: "Changes in body weight are linked to a dysfunction in insulin function in people with type 1 diabetes. In these patients, the pancreas does not produce sufficient amounts of insulin, or insulin production in their bodies stops completely. Consequently, this hormone does not transport glucose from food to the cells in their bodies for use as an energy source. This depletes fat reserves and muscle tissue, resulting in significant weight loss."
The doctor pointed out that people with type 1 diabetes try to get rid of excess glucose by producing larger amounts of urine. This increased urination results in greater fluid loss from the body, which also exacerbates weight loss.
For his part, British endocrinologist Christian Pollert pointed out that sudden weight loss may be linked to thyroid disease. Hyperthyroidism can accelerate the body's metabolism and lead to weight loss despite an increased appetite. In this case, the patient may also experience symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, hand tremors, nausea, diarrhea, and chronic fatigue.
