North Korean leader Kim Jong Un tested a modern sniper rifle, according to official media reports on Saturday, during his inspection of special forces, stating that their training had enhanced "actual combat capability to ensure victory."
During his inspection of the special operations unit on Friday, Kim said, "The actual combat capability to ensure victory on the battlefield is strengthened through intensive training," according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
He added that their training was "a clearer expression of patriotism and loyalty to the country," according to the agency.
Official media published photos showing Kim looking through the scope of a sniper rifle, which the agency said "will be newly supplied to the special operations units."
Kim supervised "live-fire drills with automatic rifles and sniper rifles," and after testing the weapon himself, he expressed "great satisfaction with the performance and power of the sniper rifle that we developed in our own way," according to the North Korean news agency.
Kim's visit to the special forces coincided with the South Korean Constitutional Court's approval of the parliament's decision to impeach President Yoon Suk-yeol for attempting to impose martial law, leading to his removal from office and a call for new elections.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who met with Kim three times during his first term, said this week that he is "in contact" with Kim and intends to "do something at some point," according to Yonhap News Agency in Seoul.
