New York - Saba:
UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher urged the UN Security Council to assess whether "Israel" is fulfilling its obligations in the Gaza Strip, warning that the humanitarian situation has become catastrophic.
Speaking from New York, Fletcher stated: “‘Israel,’ as the occupying power, is obligated to ensure access to food and medical supplies—but that is not happening. Instead, civilians are being killed, injured, forcibly displaced, and stripped of their dignity.”
Fletcher described the situation by saying: “Words fail to capture the conditions in Gaza,” adding, “Food is running out, and those who seek it risk being shot... People are dying while trying to feed their families.”
He also addressed recent statements made by members of the Israeli government regarding the deliberate denial of food to Palestinians.
Fletcher said: “Using starvation of civilians as a method of warfare would, of course, constitute a war crime.”
He concluded: “We should not—and in fact must not—choose between demanding an end to the starvation of civilians in Gaza and demanding the unconditional release of all hostages.”
