Botafogo won the Brazilian football league title last night, for the first time since 1995, days after winning its first title in the Copa Libertadores South American club competition.
Botafogo clinched the Brazilian league title for the third time in its history and the first since 1995 after beating São Paulo by two goals to one in the final round of the tournament.
Botafogo's winning goal was scored by Gheorgheri in injury time, making up for his red card dismissal after a rough tackle in the Copa Libertadores final.
Botafogo finished the season six points ahead of Palmeiras, who lost at home to Fluminense 0-1, with the latter securing their survival in the league.
Botafogo had won the Libertadores Cup for the first time in its history eight days ago in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, after beating Atlético Mineiro 3-1 in the final in a meeting completed with ten men from the second minute.
Botafogo will participate next summer in the Club World Cup in its new expanded 32-team format.
The draw pitted him against Paris Saint-Germain of France, Atletico Madrid of Spain, and the Seattle Sounders of the United States.
