UEFA Champions League holders Real Madrid announced on Thursday the nature of the injury suffered by French star Kylian Mbappe during the 3-2 win over Atalanta last Tuesday in the sixth round of the La Liga stage.

According to AFP, the club said in a brief statement, "After tests carried out today, the club's medical services diagnosed an injury to our player Kylian Mbappe in the left thigh. We await the evolution of his condition."

In the match against Atalanta, Mbappe opened the scoring for Real Madrid in the 10th minute but had to leave the pitch in the 36th minute after complaining of an injury.

Real Madrid are set to play the Intercontinental Cup final next Wednesday against the winner of the Challenge Cup match, which will take place the day after Saturday between Al Ahly of Egypt and Pachuca of Mexico.
