New York - Saba:
According to a recent study, complex liver surgeries may be better performed by robots.
The study, the results of which were published Friday, says surgeons at a major New York City hospital looked at 353 surgeries performed between 2017 and 2023 in which parts of patients’ livers were removed, including 112 open surgeries performed with large incisions, 107 laparoscopic surgeries, and 134 using surgical robots.
After taking into account individual patient risk factors and the complexity of each case, those who underwent laparoscopic or robotic surgeries had an average length of stay that was 39 percent and 43 percent shorter, respectively, and were 89 percent and 62 percent less likely to have complications, respectively, than patients who underwent open surgery.
Robotic surgeries were 87 percent less likely to require conversion to open surgery during surgery than laparoscopic surgeries, according to a report in the journal Surgical Endoscopy.
In operations performed to treat malignant tumors, the chances of achieving clean resection margins without leaving any cancer cells were similar, regardless of the surgical method used.
