Geneva - Saba:
The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Friday called for the resumption of urgent medical evacuations from Gaza Strip, with up to 15,000 people needing treatment outside the Strip.
The WHO Representative in the occupied Palestinian territories, Rik Peeperkorn, explained that the health needs in Gaza Strip are enormous, with only 18 out of 36 hospitals partially functioning, and 11 field hospitals, while the ceasefire has allowed adequate health supplies to reach 1.6 million people.
He referred to the mental health burden in Gaza, while there are only two psychiatrists in the north of the Strip along with a small number of mental health specialists, and the only mental health hospital has not been operational since 2024.
The organisation deployed surgical teams to support capacity at Al-Ahli Arab Hospital, and strengthened disease surveillance , response and the operation of the early warning system, while hospitals in Rafah are in need of renovation.
