Moscow - Saba:
Vietnam in January reduced its coffee exports to Russia by almost half on an annual basis, Russian media said on Friday, as Brazil fully compensated for the lost volumes, becoming the main supplier of coffee beans to Russia.
The Novosti Agency reported that according to data from the Russian National Statistics Service, Vietnamese coffee sales to Russia at the beginning of the year fell by half compared to the same period last year, reaching 7.5 thousand tons. However, the value of these shipments remained almost unchanged despite the rapid rise in global coffee prices, reaching $ 39 million, which is only 6% less than last year's level.
The lost volume was fully compensated by Brazil: Russian companies bought 10.1 thousand tons of coffee from it, which is 3.1 times the volume of purchases during the same period last year. In monetary terms, Brazilian sales to Russia increased by almost five times, reaching $52.3 million compared to $10.7 million a year earlier.
As a result, Brazil became the main supplier of coffee to Russia in January. Before that, Vietnam had always been in the lead at the beginning of the year, selling Russian companies almost three times more coffee than the South American country.
Overall, last year, Vietnam remained the main coffee exporter to Russia for the twelfth time in a row, supplying Russia with 14% more coffee beans than Brazil.
