Pretoria - Saba:
The US Charge d'Affaires in South Africa, Dana Brown, has resigned amid escalating tensions between the two countries, and a new diplomat is expected to be appointed in the middle of next month.
The US government informed South Africa of Brown's departure yesterday, Thursday, with the new diplomat's arrival set for March 14. Brown had represented Washington at the G20 foreign ministers' meeting in South Africa last week, where US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was absent from the meeting after mocking the summit's goals.
It is noteworthy that relations between the two countries have been strained after US President Donald Trump's statements, in which he accused South Africa of "land confiscation", in reference to the new law signed by President Cyril Ramaphosa last December, which gives the government the power to control land for public purposes.
