French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou called on Friday for establishing a European defense alliance independent of the United States, pointing to the need to re-evaluate reliance on American security in Europe.
Bayrou said that "the European defense union will be the only possible solution," stressing that France has been right since the era of General Charles de Gaulle in its belief that independence is the only guarantee of security.
He also stressed the need to exempt defense spending from European deficit rules, and indicated that the French military budget for 2025 will witness an increase of more than three billion euros.
