Fifteen people were injured on Thursday after two KF-16 fighter jets of the South Korean Air Force accidentally dropped eight bombs outside a training ground during live ammunition exercises.
South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported on Thursday morning that authorities in South Korea said they had received a report that a projectile believed to have come from the plane had fallen on a road near a civilian home in the city of Bucheon, located 40 kilometers north of Seoul. The incident resulted in 15 people being injured with injuries ranging from minor to serious, in addition to destroying a church and six other buildings in the village.
Seoul fire authorities reported that two people were seriously injured, most of the injuries were broken bones, while all the injured remained conscious, and all the injured were taken to hospitals for treatment, in conjunction with the damage to a cargo truck as a result of the incident.
This comes as South Korean military officials said that "two KF-16 fighters, which were participating in a live-fire training, abnormally released four MK-82 bombs outside the training range in Bucheon at 10:04 a.m."
The Air Force has launched an investigation into the incident, headed by Vice Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Park Ki-wan, and apologized for the damage to civilians.
The Air Force issued a statement expressing regret for the damage to civilians caused by the abnormal bomb-dropping incident, and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
It added: "We will actively take all necessary measures, including compensation for the damage."
