Madrid – SABA:
The Spanish government unilaterally canceled a €6.8 million arms contract with an Israeli company on Thursday, following significant tensions within the ruling left-wing coalition, according to government sources.
The sources stated that the relevant ministries decided to terminate the ammunition procurement contract with Israel’s IMI Systems (formerly Israel Military Industries), citing the government’s firm commitment to the Palestinian cause.
The cancellation was enforced after failed negotiations with IMI Systems regarding a deal for 9mm ammunition intended for Spain’s Civil Guard units.
The radical-left coalition partner "Sumar" strongly opposed the deal, calling it a "blatant violation" of Spain’s pledge to halt military trade with Israel since October 7, 2023.
Spain has not imported or exported arms to Israel since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza, which has killed over 51,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children.
Spain’s recognition of Palestinian statehood in May 2024 has further strained relations with Israel, leading to retaliatory measures such as restricting consular services for Palestinians in Quds.
