Hodeidah – Saba:
A community initiative to rehabilitate agricultural lands affected by seasonal floods has been launched in the Bani Atifah area of Al-Jumadi subdistrict, Bajil District, Al-Hodeidah Governorate.

The initiative is a joint effort involving the local authority, the Agricultural Cooperative Union, the Geological Survey Authority, and the Bajil Multi-purpose Agricultural Cooperative Association, with active participation from local residents. It aims to restore damaged farmlands and enhance their capacity to retain water by constructing earthen barriers and drainage channels that reduce soil and water loss and improve water resource utilization.

Abdulmoneim Al-Rifa’i, Director of Bajil District, described the initiative as a model of cooperation between local communities and official bodies in addressing flood damage. He affirmed the local authority’s commitment to supporting such projects that contribute to protecting agricultural lands and improving farmers' livelihoods.

He added that land reclamation and the construction of water barriers are among the top priorities for the local authority within the broader strategy to address climate change and seasonal disasters.

Al-Rifa’i also praised the vital role played by the Bajil Cooperative Association in spearheading and implementing such initiatives, supporting , rehabilitation efforts, and assisting farmers in affected areas.

For his part, Hussein Dhiabi, Executive Director of the Association, noted that the initiative is part of a broader series of cooperative activities aimed at protecting agricultural resources, achieving self-sufficiency, and enabling farmers to overcome the impacts of floods and climate change.

He emphasized that the association adopts a participatory development vision that involves farmers in planning and implementation while promoting a culture of proactive prevention through low-cost yet high-impact land reclamation projects that protect farmlands and boost productivity.

He concluded that these efforts are a cornerstone for revitalizing the agricultural sector and ensuring food security amid the recurring climate challenges facing Al-Hodeidah Governorate.
