Washington - Saba:
US President Donald Trump's decision to impose additional customs duties on imports from Mexico, Canada and China will take effect starting Saturday, February 1, spokesman for the White House said.
"February 1 (today) is the deadline that President Trump previously announced," Caroline Levitt added at a press conference. "A 25% customs duty will be imposed on Mexico and Canada, and a 10% duty on China for sending to our country and allowing the spread of illegal fentanyl there, which has led to the death of tens of millions of Americans."
The US president "will keep his promise," she said, noting that he is not afraid that this move will lead to higher prices for Americans or the outbreak of trade wars with affected countries.
"The president intends to reduce prices and inflation at the same time as imposing these tariffs."
President Donald Trump had previously stated that upon assuming office, he would impose a 25% tariff on products coming from Canada and Mexico, justifying this by not solving the problem of illegal immigration and drug smuggling into the United States. He also pledged to increase tariffs on Chinese products previously by 10%.
After his inauguration ceremony on January 20, Trump confirmed that he intends to impose these fees starting February 1.
