Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed Russia's deep concern on Tuesday over what is happening in Syria, stressing that the outbreak of violence there is unacceptable.

Lavrov said during a press conference, according to Sputnik, "Naturally, we are concerned about what is happening in Syria, given the efforts we have been making for many years with our partners and members of the international community to ensure peace and security for all political, ethnic, and religious groups in this friendly country, so that it is free from terrorist threats."

Lavrov added that "this outbreak of violence is, of course, unacceptable."

For his part, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Tuesday that Russia wants to see a "united and prosperous" Syria. "We want to see a united, prosperous, developing, balanced, and friendly Syria," Peskov told reporters.

Peskov also stated that the Middle East is a volatile region, and Moscow wants to see it stabilized.

Peskov noted that destabilizing the situation in Syria could have dire consequences for the entire Middle East.
