Canada will never become part of the United States, despite threats from US President Donald Trump, the new leader of Canada's ruling Liberal Party, Mark Carney, said on Monday after winning the party's internal elections.
"America is not Canada, and Canada will never be part of America in any way," Carney said in a speech amid escalating tensions between Ottawa and Washington over trade tariffs.
"We did not start this debate.. In trade, as in hockey, Canada will win," he added.
Earlier today, the Canadian Liberal Party announced the election of former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney as the new leader of the party and government, succeeding Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation from the leadership of the ruling party and the premiership.
The party said in a statement on the social networking site "X" after a secret vote by its members on Sunday: "Introducing our new Liberal leader Mark Carney!"
Carney, 59, is set to lead the party in the upcoming general election, which is expected to be called in the coming weeks.
Trudeau had previously announced his intention to step down after ten years leading Canada, amid sharp criticism of his immigration policies and high inflation rates, which led to a decline in his popularity and prompted the party to search for new leadership.
