The European Commission warned the United States on Sunday of a tough response if it imposes tariffs on European goods.
Agence France-Presse reported, quoting a Commission official, that Brussels warned Washington of a tough response if it imposes tariffs on European goods.
The official said "The European Union firmly believes that low tariffs promote growth and economic stability, but it will respond strongly if unfair tariffs are imposed on its goods."
Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced that he would impose tariffs on goods imported from the European Union because Brussels treats Washington badly.
Trump had signed an executive order imposing tariffs on goods coming from Canada, China and Mexico.
A 25% tariff will be applied to imports from Mexico and Canada, and an additional 10% tariff will be imposed on goods coming from China.
The measures will take effect on February 4, and Canada, China and Mexico account for a third of all goods and services imported into the United States.
